You will then discover the heart of the city: the Plaza de Mayo. Around it are the historic Cabildo (Town Hall) where the movement for independence from Spain was first planned; the Casa Rosada (Presidential Palace), and the Metropolitan Cathedral where is buried the General San Martín. Near the Plaza you can find theatres and a commercial area. Then you will discover the 9 de Julio Avenue, the widest in the world. You will also discover the main Avenues of Buenos Aires: Corrientes Avenue, known as the entertainment centre, a street of theatres and nightlife; de Mayo Avenue, with a strong Spanish influence; the Florida Street, where you may enjoy a tango demonstration in the street.
You will continue to La Boca. Its name (“The Mouth”) is due to its location: at the mouth of the Rio de la Plata where the Riachuelo flows. It was the historic port of Buenos Aires before it was moved further north of the city for technical reasons (shallow water, sandbanks…). The district was the refuge of the immigrants, especially Italians between 1880 and 1930. Nowadays, La Boca owes its popularity to the street “Caminito“, where there are heaps of small humble houses, made of coloured sheet metal. It is the Argentine painter Quinquela Martin, native of the district, who is at the origin of the first mismatched paintings of the small street.
La Recoleta: Here one gets to know why Buenos Aires is considered as the “Paris of Latin America”. Exquisite and refined, this place offers a lot of monuments and museums. You will visit the Cemetery where Evita Perón is buried.
